We get calls from customers all the time: “We have a decent extruder, temperatures are stable, PE or PP material is good, but the pipe comes out uneven—the corrugation is sometimes shallow, sometimes blurry, the inner wall isn’t smooth, and the winding is messy.”
In small diameters—especially 4 to 32 mm—the extruder isn’t always the problem. Very often, what decides the outcome sits inside the corrugator: the forming modules.

Simply put: the melt exits the die head as a soft tube. It then enters a moving chain of molds. The forming module closes, vacuum or air pressure pushes the melt against the cavity, a “wave” forms, cooling sets in, and the shape locks.
So forming modules aren’t just “metal blocks with ribs.” They are the working tool that defines:
outer and inner diameter
corrugation pitch
wave depth
wall thickness
inner surface smoothness
how well the pipe bends without kinking
This is especially critical for PE and PP. Both materials have their own melt flow and cooling behavior. If the module geometry isn’t well designed, the pipe starts to “drift” after just a few meters.
Three things matter most:
Module machining accuracy. Poor tolerances show up as visible parting-line marks on the pipe. Customers call it “corrugation artifacts.” In reality, it’s bad fit between forming modules.
Cooling design inside the module. Small pipes cool fast, but if heat isn’t removed evenly, one side becomes rigid while the other stays soft. Result: ovality.
Wear resistance of the material. PE/PP runs at speed. Modules heat up, friction builds, and cheap steel deforms within months. A proper module from our plant uses hardened/nitrided steel, CNC-cut profiles, and delivers real service life.
Yes—but not “any” diameter. A line usually covers a range: say 6–10 mm, 10–32 mm, or 16–50 mm. Within that range, you swap the forming modules and die head, and you’re back in production.
Customer-friendly options include:
quick module change without stripping the entire chain
same center height across sizes
dual- or triple-channel modules for very small diameters—output goes up without buying a second line
For small diameters, this flexibility often matters more than “just a bigger extruder.”
As a manufacturer, we’ll be straight with you: you can size the extruder to fit your budget, but don’t compromise on the forming modules.
A poor module = scrap, downtime, rework, complaints from end-users.
A good module = consistent corrugation, clean inner wall, less flash, longer line life.
If you plan to make cable conduits, automotive wire protection, washing machine drain hoses, ventilation tubes, or light drainage—start your line selection not with “how many kW” but with: what forming modules do I need, for which PE/PP grade, what diameter tolerance, and how often will I change sizes?
Our small-diameter single-wall PE/PP corrugated pipe line is built around this component. We don’t sell “a box with motors”—we match tooling to your pipe: corrugation profile, pitch, wall thickness, color, flexibility, and winding speed.
Send us a sample or drawing, and our engineer will tell you exactly which forming module set fits your market.
